Barry's Career as a Regular Police Officer with Essex Police

Barry's career with Essex Police as a Regular Officer (as opposed to a Special Constable which he was for a few years) started in 1981 as a Probationer, but with one difference. Having already had two careers in widely differernt fields he started late, 32 years old.

Before he finished his Probation he became a Beat Officer in Basildon. He wanted to know he could survive on his own terms quickly, because if the Police career was not for him, he could slip back into Industry without too big a break. He did more than survive, he prospered! Whilst working on the Beat he quickly learned to give talks and presentations to all ages on many subjects.

A couple of years later he moved into the Divisional Control room, mainly because a new computer system was coming in and he wanted to be part of it. (Believe it or not, Barry almost predates modern computing i.e. the small ones, but that is another story)

After a couple of years doing that, Barry moved outside as a Response driver on shift, but also tuning up his love of Police computers. Because of that interest he moved inside a few years later as a Research Officer for the Senior Officers.

It was whilst a Research Officer that he trained as an Improvied Explosive Device Police Search Officer, searching for bombs, explosives, and as the skills transfer Searching at Major investigations such as Murders, Rapes, etc. This actually runs parallel to his normal day job.

After several other areas in the next few years, Inspection Officer, Shift Officer, Arrest Process Team; he became involved in the Danielle Jones Murder Investigation in Essex, searching the Offender's home address.

Within a few weeks he was running the Search Operations room for the Investigation, having designed and created a Major Search Database system now known as P.R.I.S.M.S. That Investigation took two years to complete. But he also took the System and his expertise to the Amanda Dowler Murder in Surrey, the Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman Murders in Soham, Cambridgeshire, and the Daniel Entwhistle Missing Person Investigation in Norfolk. He received a Commendation from the Chief Constable for his creation of the P.R.I.S.M. Sytem.

After the completion of the Danielle Jones Murder Investigation Barry moved into the field of Counter Terrorism Exercise Planning, where the Police and other Agencies practice Terrorism Countermeasures.

His last post as a Regular Officer was running the I.T. arena of a Major Counter Terrorism Exercise in Essex involving the Home Office, Security Services and the Military.

That didn't stop his Police involvment though, as Essex called him back to create a system for the Identification, Collection and collation of evidence relating to the so called 'Cold Case' Murder investigations that remained unsolved in the Essex Police Area.

His latest foray back into the Police arena was in supplying the P.R.I.S.M. System and Training Officers to use it for the case involving Five Murdered Prostitutes in Suffolk. He even wrote some more software for that case due to the complexity of the Investigation.

Quite a varied career, I think you will agree. Full of action, such as arresting the First Murderer in the Country in 1989; and boredom with laughs during observations for Offenders. His career has seen much humour; and tradegy, but was never uninteresting for long.

Barry now runs his own Company with a wide spread of Services somewhat similar to his time in the Police arena. Though he retired in 2004 Barry still maintained his links with the Police and is still available if the need arises.
