I have never owned a computer in my life. So how do I even begin to decide which computer to buy? There are so many at such a variation in prices. How do you start?

The first part has to be - don't panic! Take your time. There are so many now that it can appear overwhelming, but if you take it slowly it will all make sense. First of all, work out what you want a computer for, because that will largely determine which computer you actually need. Not which make, but what type of computer. If you want one for ordinary things like writing letters, surfing the internet, storing photos, etc, then you won't need a really powerful computer; but if you want to play some of today's games then you might well need quite a powerful computer. We'll cover more about computer types later. Think of where you want to use it.There are what are called desktops (Towers), that take up quite a bit of room when you add in the mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc. Laptops, that are much smaller, or notebooks even smaller than that. A laptop may be more practical than a desktop. But for the moment just thnk of where and what you want to do with it. More on this subject later
